Narrative:
After landing in atl on runway 26R, we were cleared to taxi down taxiway B (eastbound) to taxiway D and hold short of runway 26L. As we were stopping prior to the runway, tower cleared us to cross runway 26L and call ground. Upon contact with ground, he mentioned that tower had not cleared us to cross the runway. I replied that we had just received clearance to cross the runway from tower. Then ground added that tower was concerned that we would not have stopped short of the runway (our initial clearance) because of our taxi speed. I informed him that we were in the act of stopping when tower cleared us across the runway. Obviously, tower was concerned that we would not adhere to our clearance to hold short of the runway because of our taxi speed. With a slower taxi speed, tower would have been more confident in our ability to comply with the hold short clearance. A slower taxi speed is the obvious corrective action.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767. TWR LCL AND GND CTL DID NOT COORDINATE AN ACFT CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 26L IN ATL.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG IN ATL ON RWY 26R, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI DOWN TXWY B (EBOUND) TO TXWY D AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 26L. AS WE WERE STOPPING PRIOR TO THE RWY, TWR CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 26L AND CALL GND. UPON CONTACT WITH GND, HE MENTIONED THAT TWR HAD NOT CLRED US TO CROSS THE RWY. I REPLIED THAT WE HAD JUST RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS THE RWY FROM TWR. THEN GND ADDED THAT TWR WAS CONCERNED THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY (OUR INITIAL CLRNC) BECAUSE OF OUR TAXI SPD. I INFORMED HIM THAT WE WERE IN THE ACT OF STOPPING WHEN TWR CLRED US ACROSS THE RWY. OBVIOUSLY, TWR WAS CONCERNED THAT WE WOULD NOT ADHERE TO OUR CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY BECAUSE OF OUR TAXI SPD. WITH A SLOWER TAXI SPD, TWR WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CONFIDENT IN OUR ABILITY TO COMPLY WITH THE HOLD SHORT CLRNC. A SLOWER TAXI SPD IS THE OBVIOUS CORRECTIVE ACTION.
