Narrative:
ZOA controller gave crossing restr of 'cross 10 mi north of sau VOR at 7000 ft.' the other pilot programmed the FMC and mistakenly put 7000 ft restr at 'sau' instead of 'sauoi' (10 mi fix). Even though I looked at the FMC legs page to confirm, I did not catch the error. We did not notice the mistake until only 6 mi north of the crossing restr (following VNAV flight guidance). I was notable to make the crossing restr so the other pilot notified ATC controller. The controller did not issue any further instructions. On reflection, I should have been more careful confirming the FMC (sau is very similar to sauoi) and crosschecked VNAV path with raw data.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC DISCOVERS TOO LATE THAT THEY HAD NOT PROGRAMMED THE FMC SO AS TO MAKE A 7000 FT XING RESTR 10 MI N OF SAU, CA.
Narrative: ZOA CTLR GAVE XING RESTR OF 'CROSS 10 MI N OF SAU VOR AT 7000 FT.' THE OTHER PLT PROGRAMMED THE FMC AND MISTAKENLY PUT 7000 FT RESTR AT 'SAU' INSTEAD OF 'SAUOI' (10 MI FIX). EVEN THOUGH I LOOKED AT THE FMC LEGS PAGE TO CONFIRM, I DID NOT CATCH THE ERROR. WE DID NOT NOTICE THE MISTAKE UNTIL ONLY 6 MI N OF THE XING RESTR (FOLLOWING VNAV FLT GUIDANCE). I WAS NOTABLE TO MAKE THE XING RESTR SO THE OTHER PLT NOTIFIED ATC CTLR. THE CTLR DID NOT ISSUE ANY FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. ON REFLECTION, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CAREFUL CONFIRMING THE FMC (SAU IS VERY SIMILAR TO SAUOI) AND XCHKED VNAV PATH WITH RAW DATA.
