Narrative:
ZTL had cleared us direct to dluth intersection. My copilot was trying to clarify with ZTL if we were to continue on the awson arrival or direct to the airport. Neither myself nor my copilot could understand the controller. He switched us to atl approach. While my copilot was talking on the radio, I was trying to insert the next waypoint on the approach in our GPS as we were then crossing dluth intersection. While typing in this intersection, I let my airspeed go above 250 KTS. Atl approach cleared us for the rest of the awson arrival. I corrected my airspeed back to 250 KTS. My copilot and myself should have questioned center earlier as to whether we were to continue on the arrival or go direct to the airport. Also, it would have helped greatly if center spoke to where you could understand them. This man talked like he had a mouth full of cotton.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LTT CREW BECAME DISTR WITH COM PROBS AND EXCEEDED 250 KTS BELOW 10000 FT.
Narrative: ZTL HAD CLRED US DIRECT TO DLUTH INTXN. MY COPLT WAS TRYING TO CLARIFY WITH ZTL IF WE WERE TO CONTINUE ON THE AWSON ARR OR DIRECT TO THE ARPT. NEITHER MYSELF NOR MY COPLT COULD UNDERSTAND THE CTLR. HE SWITCHED US TO ATL APCH. WHILE MY COPLT WAS TALKING ON THE RADIO, I WAS TRYING TO INSERT THE NEXT WAYPOINT ON THE APCH IN OUR GPS AS WE WERE THEN XING DLUTH INTXN. WHILE TYPING IN THIS INTXN, I LET MY AIRSPD GO ABOVE 250 KTS. ATL APCH CLRED US FOR THE REST OF THE AWSON ARR. I CORRECTED MY AIRSPD BACK TO 250 KTS. MY COPLT AND MYSELF SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED CTR EARLIER AS TO WHETHER WE WERE TO CONTINUE ON THE ARR OR GO DIRECT TO THE ARPT. ALSO, IT WOULD HAVE HELPED GREATLY IF CTR SPOKE TO WHERE YOU COULD UNDERSTAND THEM. THIS MAN TALKED LIKE HE HAD A MOUTH FULL OF COTTON.
