Narrative:

We were returning from a flight from lih to hnl. We were told we were being vectored to a visual for runway 8L. We were to maintain present heading of 110 degrees and cleared to 5000 ft. (Normally we are cleared to 3000 ft at this point.) we were level at 5000 ft and told to turn to 120 degrees then seconds later to 140 degrees. We were issued DC10 traffic at about 11 O'clock position at which I thought was 5900 ft. I reported him in sight and he appeared to be on a heading that would take him far to our right. This traffic was given a turn. We were then given a descent to 3000 ft and began descent. Within seconds, it appeared that we were on a collision or near collision course. We began evasive actions but the DC10 passed just to the right of us at what I would estimate to be 300 ft higher than us. I heard the pilot tell approach he was in a TCASII climb.

Title: A SHORTS SD33 FREIGHTER IS VECTORED INTO THE PATH OF OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC, A DC10, W OF HNL, HI.

Narrative: WE WERE RETURNING FROM A FLT FROM LIH TO HNL. WE WERE TOLD WE WERE BEING VECTORED TO A VISUAL FOR RWY 8L. WE WERE TO MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG OF 110 DEGS AND CLRED TO 5000 FT. (NORMALLY WE ARE CLRED TO 3000 FT AT THIS POINT.) WE WERE LEVEL AT 5000 FT AND TOLD TO TURN TO 120 DEGS THEN SECONDS LATER TO 140 DEGS. WE WERE ISSUED DC10 TFC AT ABOUT 11 O'CLOCK POS AT WHICH I THOUGHT WAS 5900 FT. I RPTED HIM IN SIGHT AND HE APPEARED TO BE ON A HDG THAT WOULD TAKE HIM FAR TO OUR R. THIS TFC WAS GIVEN A TURN. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A DSCNT TO 3000 FT AND BEGAN DSCNT. WITHIN SECONDS, IT APPEARED THAT WE WERE ON A COLLISION OR NEAR COLLISION COURSE. WE BEGAN EVASIVE ACTIONS BUT THE DC10 PASSED JUST TO THE R OF US AT WHAT I WOULD ESTIMATE TO BE 300 FT HIGHER THAN US. I HEARD THE PLT TELL APCH HE WAS IN A TCASII CLB.
