Narrative:
Copilot left flight deck after receiving clearance, prior to taxi request, in order to clean headset microphone. Captain completed taxi checklist and requested taxi clearance alone in cockpit and began taxi. Copilot entered cockpit as aircraft was entering active runway. As we held in position on runway, the tower controller issued 'taxi into position and hold' clearance to us. The captain had misunderstood the taxi instructions to include 'taxi into position and hold' (those words were never used from ATC). The taxi instructions were: taxi to runway xx via runway yy make a left turn (on runway yy) you're #1. This event was caused by the captain operating alone (single pilot), ATC using poor phraseology, the captain misinterping the clearance and not looking for the correct 'key words' used in proper ATC/pilot radio phraseology. Greater emphasis needs to be placed in ATC and pilot training on correct radio phraseology.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR PLT CONTINUES TO TAXI WITH COPLT OUT OF THE COCKPIT. RWY INCURSION WAS THE RESULT.
Narrative: COPLT LEFT FLT DECK AFTER RECEIVING CLRNC, PRIOR TO TAXI REQUEST, IN ORDER TO CLEAN HEADSET MIKE. CAPT COMPLETED TAXI CHKLIST AND REQUESTED TAXI CLRNC ALONE IN COCKPIT AND BEGAN TAXI. COPLT ENTERED COCKPIT AS ACFT WAS ENTERING ACTIVE RWY. AS WE HELD IN POS ON RWY, THE TWR CTLR ISSUED 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' CLRNC TO US. THE CAPT HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO INCLUDE 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' (THOSE WORDS WERE NEVER USED FROM ATC). THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE: TAXI TO RWY XX VIA RWY YY MAKE A L TURN (ON RWY YY) YOU'RE #1. THIS EVENT WAS CAUSED BY THE CAPT OPERATING ALONE (SINGLE PLT), ATC USING POOR PHRASEOLOGY, THE CAPT MISINTERPING THE CLRNC AND NOT LOOKING FOR THE CORRECT 'KEY WORDS' USED IN PROPER ATC/PLT RADIO PHRASEOLOGY. GREATER EMPHASIS NEEDS TO BE PLACED IN ATC AND PLT TRAINING ON CORRECT RADIO PHRASEOLOGY.
