Narrative:
Aircraft was dispatched with intermixed engine confign. Both engines were de-rated to -217C power (instead of -219) by maintenance control. However, maintenance did not reconfigure the FMS database for -217C (it remained at -219). There was a company memo posted regarding this situation, but the crew missed reading it even though we did check the board the day before at home base. (Less than perfect system for disseminating important information.) when we arrived at home base and talked to maintenance, they reported that the FMS should probably have been deferred (and subsequently was) because they had no way of reprogramming the FMS for -217C power (in contrast to what the memo stated!). Maintenance's engineering orders for the de-rated confign made no mention of the FMS database whatsoever! Obviously different departments within the company were working at cross-purposes on this.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD88 WAS DISPATCHED AND OPERATED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH 2 DE-RATED ENGS NOT ENTERED IN THE FMC DATABASE.
Narrative: ACFT WAS DISPATCHED WITH INTERMIXED ENG CONFIGN. BOTH ENGS WERE DE-RATED TO -217C PWR (INSTEAD OF -219) BY MAINT CTL. HOWEVER, MAINT DID NOT RECONFIGURE THE FMS DATABASE FOR -217C (IT REMAINED AT -219). THERE WAS A COMPANY MEMO POSTED REGARDING THIS SIT, BUT THE CREW MISSED READING IT EVEN THOUGH WE DID CHK THE BOARD THE DAY BEFORE AT HOME BASE. (LESS THAN PERFECT SYS FOR DISSEMINATING IMPORTANT INFO.) WHEN WE ARRIVED AT HOME BASE AND TALKED TO MAINT, THEY RPTED THAT THE FMS SHOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN DEFERRED (AND SUBSEQUENTLY WAS) BECAUSE THEY HAD NO WAY OF REPROGRAMMING THE FMS FOR -217C PWR (IN CONTRAST TO WHAT THE MEMO STATED!). MAINT'S ENGINEERING ORDERS FOR THE DE-RATED CONFIGN MADE NO MENTION OF THE FMS DATABASE WHATSOEVER! OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT DEPTS WITHIN THE COMPANY WERE WORKING AT CROSS-PURPOSES ON THIS.
