Narrative:
Flight was level at 15000 ft, just east of jaybo intersection, on dupont 4 arrival into phl. ZDC (127.7) reported VFR traffic, opposite direction, at 14500 ft. The other aircraft (call sign Y) showed -400 ft on TCASII. I verified local altimeter with center. We were on autoplt, level 15000 ft. On TCASII, traffic showed -300 ft. At about 1 mi it showed -200 ft. I took the aircraft off autoplt and climbed, just as we got a TCASII RA. We reported the RA and climb to center, and then descended back to 15000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-400 PIC CLBS FROM ASSIGNED ALT TO AVOID OPPOSITE DIRECTION CLBING VFR TFC THAT WAS POINTED OUT BY ZDC.
Narrative: FLT WAS LEVEL AT 15000 FT, JUST E OF JAYBO INTXN, ON DUPONT 4 ARR INTO PHL. ZDC (127.7) RPTED VFR TFC, OPPOSITE DIRECTION, AT 14500 FT. THE OTHER ACFT (CALL SIGN Y) SHOWED -400 FT ON TCASII. I VERIFIED LCL ALTIMETER WITH CTR. WE WERE ON AUTOPLT, LEVEL 15000 FT. ON TCASII, TFC SHOWED -300 FT. AT ABOUT 1 MI IT SHOWED -200 FT. I TOOK THE ACFT OFF AUTOPLT AND CLBED, JUST AS WE GOT A TCASII RA. WE RPTED THE RA AND CLB TO CTR, AND THEN DSNDED BACK TO 15000 FT.
