Narrative:

It was a VFR training flight with a private pilot, I was the instructor. When we were dispatched to the airplane there was a note that the transducer was indicating a higher than actual altitude. We decided that we would not fly through salt lake's airspace, so we stayed well clear of it. We were not even in radar coverage most of the time, but we were in the mode C viel. It was not until after the flight that I noticed an inoperative sticker on our mode C. Im not sure if it was really inoperative or not, but we were in the mode C viel. Because of transponder problems at the preflight, we decided to go to heber, which was the same general direction as slc. Because of a late start and because the aircraft had to be back soon, we didn't get the most current WX information as we left. We should have taken the time to plan the new flight more thoroughly.
