Narrative:
Departure point houston sugarland airport. ATC clearance read 'cleared vectors scholes, scholes 6 departure, victor 70 lch victor 20 micro direct lft.' after being cleared to 11000 ft altitude and direct scholes 6 departure, I intercepted the scholes 054 degree radial V70 to lch. ZHU asked what my heading was. I replied 055 degrees. He then asked me what radial should I be on. I replied I thought the 070 degree radial, thinking V70. I looked at the SID and came back to the controller with the 083 degree radial to metzy intersection. The controller then replied, 'continue on the 083 degree radial to metzy, I will have direct lft prior to you reaching metzy intersection.' I called ATC and stated that I understood that after scholes I thought that I was cleared via the vuh 054 degree radial to lch. I should have asked ATC if they wanted me on the 054 degree radial or the scholes 6 which is the 083 degree radial. Nothing else was said regarding the clearance interpretation. My flight into lft continued with no further question.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE58 PLT HAS A PROB UNDERSTANDING HIS ASSIGNED RTE CLRNC AND THE RADIAL TO FLY TO BE IN ACCORD WITH HIS FILED FLT PLAN, ZHU, TX.
Narrative: DEP POINT HOUSTON SUGARLAND ARPT. ATC CLRNC READ 'CLRED VECTORS SCHOLES, SCHOLES 6 DEP, VICTOR 70 LCH VICTOR 20 MICRO DIRECT LFT.' AFTER BEING CLRED TO 11000 FT ALT AND DIRECT SCHOLES 6 DEP, I INTERCEPTED THE SCHOLES 054 DEG RADIAL V70 TO LCH. ZHU ASKED WHAT MY HDG WAS. I REPLIED 055 DEGS. HE THEN ASKED ME WHAT RADIAL SHOULD I BE ON. I REPLIED I THOUGHT THE 070 DEG RADIAL, THINKING V70. I LOOKED AT THE SID AND CAME BACK TO THE CTLR WITH THE 083 DEG RADIAL TO METZY INTXN. THE CTLR THEN REPLIED, 'CONTINUE ON THE 083 DEG RADIAL TO METZY, I WILL HAVE DIRECT LFT PRIOR TO YOU REACHING METZY INTXN.' I CALLED ATC AND STATED THAT I UNDERSTOOD THAT AFTER SCHOLES I THOUGHT THAT I WAS CLRED VIA THE VUH 054 DEG RADIAL TO LCH. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED ATC IF THEY WANTED ME ON THE 054 DEG RADIAL OR THE SCHOLES 6 WHICH IS THE 083 DEG RADIAL. NOTHING ELSE WAS SAID REGARDING THE CLRNC INTERP. MY FLT INTO LFT CONTINUED WITH NO FURTHER QUESTION.
