Narrative:
While on a field trip to ZZZ to change the nose gear on xyz, I signed for verification of correct installation in the required inspection item blocks of the logbook. Due to not being thoroughly familiar with the maintenance manual's procedures concerning required inspection items, I was under the impression that they could be signed for by a crew chief at a line station. I was not aware that the crew chiefs had to have had required inspection item training to legally accomplish buybacks and assumed it to be like a backchk situation. On jan/xa/00 I was made aware of my mistake. I immediately notified my manager, abc XXX. He contacted the quality assurance manager and had a temporary required inspection item qualification issued to me. I was then sent to meet the aircraft at the gate at ZZZ and make an entry in the logbook verifying that the installation, rig, etc, was accomplished per the procedures set forth in maintenance manual 32-21-01. Upon return, it was agreed that a non compliance would be issued in this case, and that it would be arranged for me to go to required inspection item training.
