Narrative:

While descending via the graham 4 arrival, we were instructed to maintain 310 KIAS or greater. Bhm VOR has a crossing restr of 10000 ft with an expectation of 250 KTS. I misread the chart and began slowing approximately 10 mi southwest of the VOR. ATC queried me and informed us that due to our slowing prematurely he would have to vector the aircraft behind us to maintain spacing. We immediately returned to 310 KTS as instructed. Factors involved: we had already flown 4 1/2 hours that day with multiple maintenance problems. This caused some fatigue in the cockpit which was a contributing factor. The whole incident was basically a mistake.

Title: FO OF A B737-300 REDUCED AIRSPD TOO SOON DUE TO MISREADING CHART CAUSING ARTCC CTLR TO VECTOR THE TRAILING ACFT IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SEPARATION.

Narrative: WHILE DSNDING VIA THE GRAHAM 4 ARR, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN 310 KIAS OR GREATER. BHM VOR HAS A XING RESTR OF 10000 FT WITH AN EXPECTATION OF 250 KTS. I MISREAD THE CHART AND BEGAN SLOWING APPROX 10 MI SW OF THE VOR. ATC QUERIED ME AND INFORMED US THAT DUE TO OUR SLOWING PREMATURELY HE WOULD HAVE TO VECTOR THE ACFT BEHIND US TO MAINTAIN SPACING. WE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 310 KTS AS INSTRUCTED. FACTORS INVOLVED: WE HAD ALREADY FLOWN 4 1/2 HRS THAT DAY WITH MULTIPLE MAINT PROBS. THIS CAUSED SOME FATIGUE IN THE COCKPIT WHICH WAS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. THE WHOLE INCIDENT WAS BASICALLY A MISTAKE.
