Narrative:
Takeoff clearance. We were cleared for takeoff on runway 22L from taxiway D. There were other flts landing on runway 27L. The controller did not say to the best we can recall to expedite the takeoff. I was flying with a new first officer on an IOE and I had not planned to give him the aircraft on the roll. We had lights on checklist done, I rolled to the center, stopped the aircraft and xferred it to the first officer. We had autothrottles armed and N1 engaged and at about 40-50 KTS, when the controller told us our takeoff clearance was canceled, I took the aircraft and stopped. We cleared the runway at taxiway T and took the long tour to get back to runway 22L. There was, I believe, an air carrier B737 on short final to runway 27L. The controller told him to go around and remarked on the frequency. The heavy (us) did not move in time. I think he believes he was giving us an immediate and we heard no clearance of the kind.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767 CAPT GIVING IOE TOOK TOO LONG TO BEGIN TKOF ROLL. ACFT ON FINAL REQUIRED A GAR.
Narrative: TKOF CLRNC. WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 22L FROM TXWY D. THERE WERE OTHER FLTS LNDG ON RWY 27L. THE CTLR DID NOT SAY TO THE BEST WE CAN RECALL TO EXPEDITE THE TKOF. I WAS FLYING WITH A NEW FO ON AN IOE AND I HAD NOT PLANNED TO GIVE HIM THE ACFT ON THE ROLL. WE HAD LIGHTS ON CHKLIST DONE, I ROLLED TO THE CTR, STOPPED THE ACFT AND XFERRED IT TO THE FO. WE HAD AUTOTHROTTLES ARMED AND N1 ENGAGED AND AT ABOUT 40-50 KTS, WHEN THE CTLR TOLD US OUR TKOF CLRNC WAS CANCELED, I TOOK THE ACFT AND STOPPED. WE CLRED THE RWY AT TXWY T AND TOOK THE LONG TOUR TO GET BACK TO RWY 22L. THERE WAS, I BELIEVE, AN ACR B737 ON SHORT FINAL TO RWY 27L. THE CTLR TOLD HIM TO GO AROUND AND REMARKED ON THE FREQ. THE HVY (US) DID NOT MOVE IN TIME. I THINK HE BELIEVES HE WAS GIVING US AN IMMEDIATE AND WE HEARD NO CLRNC OF THE KIND.
