Narrative:
We landed on runway 17L at dfw. After clearing the runway, ground control instructed us to taxi on taxiway Q, turn right on taxiway er, hold short of runway 17C and monitor tower. My first officer was a new hire and I was doing his IOE. I next instructed him to contact dfw operations to make an 'on the ground' call. As we turned onto taxiway er, he contacted operations. I was monitoring both tower and operations frequencys. I should have been monitoring only tower, but I was helping him with unfamiliar radio calls. I thought I heard tower instruct me to cross runway 17R, turn right on taxiway K and contact ground. I read back the clearance and crossed runways 17C and then runway 17R. Tower instructed me to stop because I had crossed runways without clearance. I had read back the clearance of an aircraft with a similar sounding call sign. At the time of my readback, another radio transmission blocked my transmission so the tower never heard my incorrect readback. If I had not been monitoring both frequencys, I would have heard the tower clearance more clearly and known that it was not for me. I should have been more suspicious of a clearance to cross runway 17R instead of runway 17C and runway 17R. In the future, I will monitor only the primary control frequency when taxiing, and when in doubt, I will confirm runway crossing clrncs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CL-65 CAPT WHILE GIVING IOE, THINKS THAT HE IS CLRED ACROSS RWY 17R AT DFW AND CONTINUES TO CROSS. THE CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: WE LANDED ON RWY 17L AT DFW. AFTER CLRING THE RWY, GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI ON TXWY Q, TURN R ON TXWY ER, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17C AND MONITOR TWR. MY FO WAS A NEW HIRE AND I WAS DOING HIS IOE. I NEXT INSTRUCTED HIM TO CONTACT DFW OPS TO MAKE AN 'ON THE GND' CALL. AS WE TURNED ONTO TXWY ER, HE CONTACTED OPS. I WAS MONITORING BOTH TWR AND OPS FREQS. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MONITORING ONLY TWR, BUT I WAS HELPING HIM WITH UNFAMILIAR RADIO CALLS. I THOUGHT I HEARD TWR INSTRUCT ME TO CROSS RWY 17R, TURN R ON TXWY K AND CONTACT GND. I READ BACK THE CLRNC AND CROSSED RWYS 17C AND THEN RWY 17R. TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO STOP BECAUSE I HAD CROSSED RWYS WITHOUT CLRNC. I HAD READ BACK THE CLRNC OF AN ACFT WITH A SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN. AT THE TIME OF MY READBACK, ANOTHER RADIO XMISSION BLOCKED MY XMISSION SO THE TWR NEVER HEARD MY INCORRECT READBACK. IF I HAD NOT BEEN MONITORING BOTH FREQS, I WOULD HAVE HEARD THE TWR CLRNC MORE CLRLY AND KNOWN THAT IT WAS NOT FOR ME. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SUSPICIOUS OF A CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 17R INSTEAD OF RWY 17C AND RWY 17R. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL MONITOR ONLY THE PRIMARY CTL FREQ WHEN TAXIING, AND WHEN IN DOUBT, I WILL CONFIRM RWY XING CLRNCS.
