Narrative:
On approach to dfw operating flight ab on 170 degree heading and descending to assigned altitude 5000 ft, flight ab given further descent to 4000 ft and left turn to 080 degrees. This clearance acknowledged by approach control from flight crew. Then approach called back and said clearance was not for flight ab and for us to return to 5000 ft. Flight ab in descent to 4000 ft passing 4700 ft, began return to 5000 ft. Before reaching 5000 ft, additional descent and vector and approach clearance received. Flight landed without incident. Note: another flight with ab in it (4 digit) was also on approach ahead of flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A WDB DSNDED FROM ASSIGNED INTERMEDIATE APCH ALT IN RESPONSE TO SIMILAR CALL SIGN.
Narrative: ON APCH TO DFW OPERATING FLT AB ON 170 DEG HDG AND DSNDING TO ASSIGNED ALT 5000 FT, FLT AB GIVEN FURTHER DSCNT TO 4000 FT AND L TURN TO 080 DEGS. THIS CLRNC ACKNOWLEDGED BY APCH CTL FROM FLC. THEN APCH CALLED BACK AND SAID CLRNC WAS NOT FOR FLT AB AND FOR US TO RETURN TO 5000 FT. FLT AB IN DSCNT TO 4000 FT PASSING 4700 FT, BEGAN RETURN TO 5000 FT. BEFORE REACHING 5000 FT, ADDITIONAL DSCNT AND VECTOR AND APCH CLRNC RECEIVED. FLT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. NOTE: ANOTHER FLT WITH AB IN IT (4 DIGIT) WAS ALSO ON APCH AHEAD OF FLT.
