Narrative:
Aircraft had a maintenance item which required a flight control check using center electric hydraulic pumps. Procedure did not clearly indicate procedures. The maintenance coordinator was consulted after a check of the flight controls prior to taxi. Revealed an additional status message. This revealed a problem with the power xfer unit. Maintenance informed that their interpretation was that the check was to be performed without the engines running. When we did so the check was normal.
