Narrative:
We were cleared to climb to 17000 ft MSL. While climbing through 15500 ft MSL, TCASII RA was received. The captain disconnected the autoplt and descended the aircraft to comply with the RA and we momentarily leveled at 15000 ft. ATC (ZID) instructed us to stop our climb at 15000 ft. Apparently there was confusion on the controller's part. He believed he had limited our climb to 15000 ft, while we believed we had been cleared to climb to 17000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLT CLBS THROUGH 15000 FT AND RECEIVES TCASII RA.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO CLB TO 17000 FT MSL. WHILE CLBING THROUGH 15500 FT MSL, TCASII RA WAS RECEIVED. THE CAPT DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND DSNDED THE ACFT TO COMPLY WITH THE RA AND WE MOMENTARILY LEVELED AT 15000 FT. ATC (ZID) INSTRUCTED US TO STOP OUR CLB AT 15000 FT. APPARENTLY THERE WAS CONFUSION ON THE CTLR'S PART. HE BELIEVED HE HAD LIMITED OUR CLB TO 15000 FT, WHILE WE BELIEVED WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO CLB TO 17000 FT.
