Narrative:
The aircraft had deferred maintenance items on the following system: APU fire detection, leading edge flaps, transit light, autoplt's system, landing lights. After takeoff and flap retraction and climbing through about 6000 ft, the first officer and I noticed strong electrical fumes, but there was no smoke. We donned oxygen masks and smoke goggles, declared an emergency, and I flew and landed while the first officer ran the smoke/fire checklist and descent, approach, and before landing checklists. After landing the fumes were gone and I canceled the emergency. One of the flight attendants told me that they had smelled the fumes during flight in the aft cabin, and the fumes grew stronger as she walked forward. The aircraft was taken off the line by maintenance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLC, FLYING AN ACFT WITH NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL DEFERRALS, DETECTS ELECTRICAL SMOKE SMELL AFTER TKOF AND EXECUTES AN EMER LNDG.
Narrative: THE ACFT HAD DEFERRED MAINT ITEMS ON THE FOLLOWING SYS: APU FIRE DETECTION, LEADING EDGE FLAPS, TRANSIT LIGHT, AUTOPLT'S SYS, LNDG LIGHTS. AFTER TKOF AND FLAP RETRACTION AND CLBING THROUGH ABOUT 6000 FT, THE FO AND I NOTICED STRONG ELECTRICAL FUMES, BUT THERE WAS NO SMOKE. WE DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND SMOKE GOGGLES, DECLARED AN EMER, AND I FLEW AND LANDED WHILE THE FO RAN THE SMOKE/FIRE CHKLIST AND DSCNT, APCH, AND BEFORE LNDG CHKLISTS. AFTER LNDG THE FUMES WERE GONE AND I CANCELED THE EMER. ONE OF THE FLT ATTENDANTS TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD SMELLED THE FUMES DURING FLT IN THE AFT CABIN, AND THE FUMES GREW STRONGER AS SHE WALKED FORWARD. THE ACFT WAS TAKEN OFF THE LINE BY MAINT.
