Narrative:
Confused maspeth climb -- right turn with the cleared whitestone climb, left turn. This was during a captain's IOE. We had been rushed on a 44 min turn with a full route clearance rerte that required reprogramming the GPS. New captain flying. Thorough briefing during taxi out but check airman distraction doing takeoff checklist. Captain began to turn left -- correctly -- check airman said to turn right -- incorrectly. Captain obeyed when he knew better, deferring to authority/authorized who was incorrect. No conflict noted.
