Narrative:
The flight plan filed route from napa (apc) to oxnard (oxr) was direct sgd direct oak J-1 fim direct hyden direct oxr. An experienced first officer received the clearance from napa ground. He briefed me as follows, clear to oxnard direct to sgd direct oak as filed climb to 8000 ft departure 127.8 squawk XXXX. At sgd VOR I turned left direct oak VOR. About 3-4 mi from sgd VOR ZOA asked which way we turned over sgd VOR. The first officer reported left turn direct to ZOA said the clearance was for a right turn (270 degree turn) not a left turn (90 degree turn) to oak. I suspect the probable cause of confusion over the clearance is in the readback of the clearance by the first officer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A CPR JET TURNED THE WRONG WAY DURING DEP CLB DUE TO MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE FO AND THE CTLR FOR NOT CATCHING THE ERROR DURING READBACK.
Narrative: THE FLT PLAN FILED RTE FROM NAPA (APC) TO OXNARD (OXR) WAS DIRECT SGD DIRECT OAK J-1 FIM DIRECT HYDEN DIRECT OXR. AN EXPERIENCED FO RECEIVED THE CLRNC FROM NAPA GND. HE BRIEFED ME AS FOLLOWS, CLR TO OXNARD DIRECT TO SGD DIRECT OAK AS FILED CLB TO 8000 FT DEP 127.8 SQUAWK XXXX. AT SGD VOR I TURNED L DIRECT OAK VOR. ABOUT 3-4 MI FROM SGD VOR ZOA ASKED WHICH WAY WE TURNED OVER SGD VOR. THE FO RPTED L TURN DIRECT TO ZOA SAID THE CLRNC WAS FOR A R TURN (270 DEG TURN) NOT A L TURN (90 DEG TURN) TO OAK. I SUSPECT THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF CONFUSION OVER THE CLRNC IS IN THE READBACK OF THE CLRNC BY THE FO.
