Narrative:

On departure when gear was raised, the right main mount indicated unsafe. While I was getting the book out to check for the correct checklist to follow, the captain instructed me to cycle the gear. I said 'let's check the book first.' he said 'no, cycle the gear, I know the procedure.' after cycling the gear, still indicated unsafe up (right maintenance mount). While I was reading the checklist, the captain reached over and cycled the gear a second time. I told him not to do it again -- the book only called for 1 cycle. Once on the ground, we inspected the damage to the main mount drag brace. I told the captain we could have easily ended up with a main mount that wouldn't extend by cycling the gear. He indicated he had learned a valuable lesson -- follow the book.
