Narrative:
Descending into maui for visual approach to runway 2, called out 10000 ft. Captain flying and doing 300 KTS. Approach said to keep speed up. Captain stayed at 300 KTS through 10000 ft and said it looked like we were 12 mi out. I had 9 mi showing on DME off maui, and pointed it out. He said keep the speed up meant to maintain present speed. He began slowing at 7000 ft and about 7 mi. I didn't want to argue at this phase of flight. I feel a blanket statement of controller to keep speed up is confusing. It should be a specific speed, so there is no confusion about the 250 KT limit, especially in the islands.
