Narrative:

Training flight/check ride with chief pilot. I was demonstrating steep turns but under IFR control. Conditions VFR. Completed a right 360 degree turn then a left. The controller was not expecting a left turn. We caused a traffic conflict. When vectored back on course we were given an altitude of 10000 ft. We climbed through our altitude by 500 ft before recognizing error. We were previously given a 'block' altitude but that clearance was amended with the traffic conflict. We were still thinking 'block' altitudes. Contributing factor: flying VFR maneuvers while on IFR flight plan and having a non standard clearance.
