Narrative:
Sna approach, sna runway 19R localizer. On approach, had trailing edge disagreement light come on at flaps 5 degree indication. Made go around. Due to the thunderstorms in the area, including a level 4 approaching the field, moderate turbulence/heavy lightning, and ATC approaching overload, I instructed the first officer to deal with the flap problem and do the checklist. I would concern myself with the WX, ATC, and flying the aircraft. After a short time the first officer informed me that we could try another approach. On second approach, flaps worked as advertised and a normal landing was made. Left flaps extended to the gate so maintenance could inspect. Aircraft was an overnighter, so I checked with maintenance the next morning to see what the problem was. Maintenance stated that they could not duplicate and retracted flaps normally. Aircraft returned to service and left on its next scheduled flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 FLC EXPERIENCES A TRAILING EDGE FLAP DISAGREEMENT LIGHT DURING BAD WX AT 5 DEGS OF FLAPS DURING THEIR APCH TO RWY 19R AT SNA, CA.
Narrative: SNA APCH, SNA RWY 19R LOC. ON APCH, HAD TRAILING EDGE DISAGREEMENT LIGHT COME ON AT FLAPS 5 DEG INDICATION. MADE GAR. DUE TO THE TSTMS IN THE AREA, INCLUDING A LEVEL 4 APCHING THE FIELD, MODERATE TURB/HVY LIGHTNING, AND ATC APCHING OVERLOAD, I INSTRUCTED THE FO TO DEAL WITH THE FLAP PROB AND DO THE CHKLIST. I WOULD CONCERN MYSELF WITH THE WX, ATC, AND FLYING THE ACFT. AFTER A SHORT TIME THE FO INFORMED ME THAT WE COULD TRY ANOTHER APCH. ON SECOND APCH, FLAPS WORKED AS ADVERTISED AND A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE. LEFT FLAPS EXTENDED TO THE GATE SO MAINT COULD INSPECT. ACFT WAS AN OVERNIGHTER, SO I CHKED WITH MAINT THE NEXT MORNING TO SEE WHAT THE PROB WAS. MAINT STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE AND RETRACTED FLAPS NORMALLY. ACFT RETURNED TO SVC AND LEFT ON ITS NEXT SCHEDULED FLT.
