Narrative:
On lga 9 departure off runway 13 with a whitestone climb. After starting our turn from 180 degrees to 40 degrees. We were given direct to dixie. Since we were already in a left turn, the captain wanted verification of which way the controller wanted the turn. Frequency congestion led to this taking a while and we continued in the left turn. This was not the direction the controller preferred but would have to work with since we were so far into the turn. Lots of congestion occurred with the controller saying we were cleared to a new altitude which we never (to our knowledge) registered. Controller then gave the altitude change again and we started the climb. Since the controller gave us a clearance different from the SID and we were already in the turn, it would have been helpful if she gave us the direction of the turn to the fix with the initial clearance.

Title: A B737-300 FLC IS GIVEN A DIRECT TO DIXIE INTXN, SW OF LGA, WHILE HAVING TURNED L TOWARDS A 040 DEG HDG AS CLRED ON THE WHITESTONE CLB. DEP CTLR HAD A PROB AS SHE WANTED A R TURN FOR TFC NEAR LGA, NY.

THIS WAS NOT THE DIRECTION THE CTLR PREFERRED BUT WOULD HAVE TO WORK WITH SINCE WE WERE SO FAR INTO THE TURN. LOTS OF CONGESTION OCCURRED WITH THE CTLR SAYING WE WERE CLRED TO A NEW ALT WHICH WE NEVER (TO OUR KNOWLEDGE) REGISTERED. CTLR THEN GAVE THE ALT CHANGE AGAIN AND WE STARTED THE CLB. SINCE THE CTLR GAVE US A CLRNC DIFFERENT FROM THE SID AND WE WERE ALREADY IN THE TURN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF SHE GAVE US THE DIRECTION OF THE TURN TO THE FIX WITH THE INITIAL CLRNC.
