Narrative:
We were flying with only an IFR en route low altitude chart in VFR conditions. There were no indications on L15 that waco regional or tstc waco are control tower airports (class D) like they are supposed to be. We flew without contacting waco regional tower, intending to fly past it to the south, but turned around when our IFR approved GPS told us it was a controled tower airport. We got within 4.4 NM from the airport to the north. We were on an IFR training sortie with my instructor. I recommended putting the 'D' symbol on the IFR chart like there is supposed to be. However, if we were also following along on a VFR chart, this would not have happened. We were at 2500 ft MSL, flying south.

Title: A C172 (T41) TRAINING FLT ON A DIRECT FLT, OFF AIRWAYS, CUTS THE EDGE OF THE CLASS D AIRSPACE OF ACT, TX.
