Narrative:
While inspecting aircraft maintenance log, the captain noticed a deferral that was logged on sunday and had to be fixed within 3 calendar days (excluding the day of occurrence). As per the pilot's flight standards manual and MEL the deferral should have been fixed for flight prior to XA00 on wednesday. Upon arriving at the aircraft at XA00 on wednesday, the deferral was still not complied with. When air carrier maintenance was informed they claimed the deferral was logged in their records at XA00 of the morning on tuesday which would have made the plane legal to fly revenue passenger. The problem was that the deferral was logged in the aircraft logbook late monday night and entered in air carrier maintenance log in ZZZ at XA00 on tuesday. After extensive discussions with the chief pilot and maintenance supervisors, the flight canceled and the plane was flown back from ZZZ to XXX part 91.
