Narrative:
Lost oil from #3 engine to shut down as per company procedures. Diverted to airport other than nearest suitable in point of time, because of unfamiliar terrain around slc airport and because san francisco was a widebody transport hub for our company, and could handle the maintenance problem more quickly or get our passenger on other flts to their destination (hnl). WX in sfo was excellent. We could maintain our altitude, we had plenty of fuel and there were no other problems with our aircraft.
