Narrative:

On climb out on departure from msp on initial contact with msp departure control, he cleared us to 7000 ft initially. As we passed 5200 ft in the climb, he reclred us to 17000 ft. At 7200 ft we received TCASII TA which immediately became an RA to descend. We acquired a visual on a DC9 at 12 O'clock position. At about the same time departure control came back to us and told us we were only cleared to 7000 ft. I told him he had cleared us to 17000 ft. At that time he reclred us to 8000 ft and heading 360 degrees to maintain a visual on the DC9. Shortly thereafter, he reclred us to 17000 ft (after the DC9 cleared). Note: during the RA maneuver, the aircraft exceeded 250 KTS.
