Narrative:
On descent to FL310, autoplt failed to capture. At FL307, captain recovered and initiated climb to FL310. Denver advised altitude alert. Center then advised traffic -- passed opposite direction traffic at FL310 with 2000 ft vertical separation and at 1 mi horizontal. Contributing factors: DC10-15 aircraft doesn't have an aural horn to advise of altdevs. I, as so, was receiving ATIS information and was not backing up captain and first officer altitude monitoring. Supplemental information from acn 471308: we were issued a TA with eastbound traffic at FL290 and approximately 3 mi.

Narrative: ON DSCNT TO FL310, AUTOPLT FAILED TO CAPTURE. AT FL307, CAPT RECOVERED AND INITIATED CLB TO FL310. DENVER ADVISED ALT ALERT.
