Narrative:
Aircraft (B727) was in climb to 17000 ft MSL. At approximately 16700 ft, ZNY gave us a new frequency and a new NAVAID other than the navaids listed on the lga 9 SID. Aircraft was IFR at this time. Pilot workload was heavy due to working WX radar for WX avoidance. Aircraft autoplt did not capture altitude, set at 17000 ft, and aircraft continued to climb to 17700 ft. Captain took manual control of aircraft and returned to 17000 ft. ZNY then cleared aircraft to FL280. No other aircraft were involved.

Title: A CLBING B727 OVERSHOOTS ITS ASSIGNED ALT WHILE THE CREW IS BUSY WITH THEIR WX RADAR 50 MI NE OF PTW, NY.
Narrative: ACFT (B727) WAS IN CLB TO 17000 FT MSL. AT APPROX 16700 FT, ZNY GAVE US A NEW FREQ AND A NEW NAVAID OTHER THAN THE NAVAIDS LISTED ON THE LGA 9 SID. ACFT WAS IFR AT THIS TIME. PLT WORKLOAD WAS HVY DUE TO WORKING WX RADAR FOR WX AVOIDANCE. ACFT AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE ALT, SET AT 17000 FT, AND ACFT CONTINUED TO CLB TO 17700 FT. CAPT TOOK MANUAL CTL OF ACFT AND RETURNED TO 17000 FT. ZNY THEN CLRED ACFT TO FL280. NO OTHER ACFT WERE INVOLVED.
