Narrative:

While approaching dfw, we were told to maintain FL240. Approximately 19 mi from the fix, we were told to cross at 11000 ft, which is published as an expected crossing altitude. We notified ATC we would not be able to comply with the crossing restr. We were then told to descend and maintain 11000 ft by center and were handed off to approach. Approach asked if we were relieved of the altitude and airspeed restr (250 KTS) which was published as expected, but never assigned. We told the controller we were told to descend to 11000 ft. From now on, in order to avoid any possible confusion, I will make it a habit to query the controller on any crossing altitude or airspeed restrs that are published as 'expect' to determine if they are to be assigned or not.

Title: B727 FO CONCERNED WITH D10 QUESTION OF WHETHER XING RESTRS WERE RELIEVED OR REQUIRED.

Narrative: WHILE APCHING DFW, WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN FL240. APPROX 19 MI FROM THE FIX, WE WERE TOLD TO CROSS AT 11000 FT, WHICH IS PUBLISHED AS AN EXPECTED XING ALT. WE NOTIFIED ATC WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLY WITH THE XING RESTR. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO DSND AND MAINTAIN 11000 FT BY CTR AND WERE HANDED OFF TO APCH. APCH ASKED IF WE WERE RELIEVED OF THE ALT AND AIRSPD RESTR (250 KTS) WHICH WAS PUBLISHED AS EXPECTED, BUT NEVER ASSIGNED. WE TOLD THE CTLR WE WERE TOLD TO DSND TO 11000 FT. FROM NOW ON, IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY POSSIBLE CONFUSION, I WILL MAKE IT A HABIT TO QUERY THE CTLR ON ANY XING ALT OR AIRSPD RESTRS THAT ARE PUBLISHED AS 'EXPECT' TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE TO BE ASSIGNED OR NOT.
