Narrative:
Climbing to assigned altitude of FL280. FMS programmed for FL290. Prior to reaching FL280, ATC cleared us to cross amg VOR at FL240. We reset altitude window to FL240. FMS VNAV 'took over' and continued our climb toward FL290 versus assigned altitude of FL280/FL240. We caught it as we climbed through FL285 and returned to FL280 -- thence via clearance to FL240. Primary cause was the new clearance just prior to leveloff. Reprogramming FMS prior to altitude capture, caused loss of capture at FL280. Should have waited for altitude capture before resetting altitude window/FMS to reflect new clearance.

Title: A B757-200 FLC OVERSHOOTS THEIR ASSIGNED ALT WHEN THEY MISPROGRAM THE ALT ALERTER TO A LOWER ALT WHILE IN CLB NEAR AMG, GA.
Narrative: CLBING TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL280. FMS PROGRAMMED FOR FL290. PRIOR TO REACHING FL280, ATC CLRED US TO CROSS AMG VOR AT FL240. WE RESET ALT WINDOW TO FL240. FMS VNAV 'TOOK OVER' AND CONTINUED OUR CLB TOWARD FL290 VERSUS ASSIGNED ALT OF FL280/FL240. WE CAUGHT IT AS WE CLBED THROUGH FL285 AND RETURNED TO FL280 -- THENCE VIA CLRNC TO FL240. PRIMARY CAUSE WAS THE NEW CLRNC JUST PRIOR TO LEVELOFF. REPROGRAMMING FMS PRIOR TO ALT CAPTURE, CAUSED LOSS OF CAPTURE AT FL280. SHOULD HAVE WAITED FOR ALT CAPTURE BEFORE RESETTING ALT WINDOW/FMS TO REFLECT NEW CLRNC.
