Narrative:
On taxi out at atl airport in front of technical operations center, left engine fire warning illuminated. Left engine was severed and agent 'a' extinguisher was discharged. Fire warning light extinguished immediately upon discharge of agent 'a.' tower controller was notified and fire equipment was requested. Company aircraft behind reported no signs of fire. Fire chief also examined engine area and reported no signs of fire. With visual confirmation of no fire and extinguishing of fire warning along with safety concerns of passenger on taxiway, I elected to not secure right engine and evacuate/evacuation. Returned to gate without further incident.

Title: AN ATR72 FLC SHUTS DOWN THE L ENG AFTER A FIRE WARNING IS ACTIVATED WHILE TAXIING OUT FROM THE GATE AT ATL, GA.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT AT ATL ARPT IN FRONT OF TECHNICAL OPS CTR, L ENG FIRE WARNING ILLUMINATED. L ENG WAS SEVERED AND AGENT 'A' EXTINGUISHER WAS DISCHARGED. FIRE WARNING LIGHT EXTINGUISHED IMMEDIATELY UPON DISCHARGE OF AGENT 'A.' TWR CTLR WAS NOTIFIED AND FIRE EQUIP WAS REQUESTED. COMPANY ACFT BEHIND RPTED NO SIGNS OF FIRE. FIRE CHIEF ALSO EXAMINED ENG AREA AND RPTED NO SIGNS OF FIRE. WITH VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF NO FIRE AND EXTINGUISHING OF FIRE WARNING ALONG WITH SAFETY CONCERNS OF PAX ON TXWY, I ELECTED TO NOT SECURE R ENG AND EVAC. RETURNED TO GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
