Narrative:
During preflight, the flight engineer discovered 2 packages of corrosive material loaded upside down. Both packages had orientation labels. Our ground handler repacked the packages so they had the proper orientation. However, I did not insist on having the packages removed from the aircraft per the IATA dangerous goods handbook. Even though my company handles large amounts of dangerous goods, our training does not adequately cover unusual problems. I submitted a company report to highlight the situation. Also, I left voice mail for the other crew members to remind them of the safety requirements. Dangerous goods are dangerous. We need to spend more time training on when to reject the entire container, not just on looking up a number in the 'un' list. Hopefully, someone else will profit from my error and reject a container that is improperly loaded. We did not have any problems -- this time.

Title: A B747-200 SO FINDS A HAZMAT CARGO DISCREPANCY AND BRINGS IT TO THE ATTN OF THE CAPT RPTR AT RCTP, CO.
Narrative: DURING PREFLT, THE FE DISCOVERED 2 PACKAGES OF CORROSIVE MATERIAL LOADED UPSIDE DOWN. BOTH PACKAGES HAD ORIENTATION LABELS. OUR GND HANDLER REPACKED THE PACKAGES SO THEY HAD THE PROPER ORIENTATION. HOWEVER, I DID NOT INSIST ON HAVING THE PACKAGES REMOVED FROM THE ACFT PER THE IATA DANGEROUS GOODS HANDBOOK. EVEN THOUGH MY COMPANY HANDLES LARGE AMOUNTS OF DANGEROUS GOODS, OUR TRAINING DOES NOT ADEQUATELY COVER UNUSUAL PROBS. I SUBMITTED A COMPANY RPT TO HIGHLIGHT THE SIT. WE DID NOT HAVE ANY PROBS -- THIS TIME.
