Narrative:
Cruising in smooth VMC when we were suddenly and violently thrusted downward and then up again. This lasted for 2-3 seconds. TCASII showed no aircraft within a 5 mi radius. I asked regional approach control who we were following and he said an MD11 that was 7 mi ahead. No injuries reported. The aircraft was grounded for inspection.
