Narrative:
I was the first officer on a citation vii flying from wichita, ks, to bedford, ma. We were cruising at FL430, deviating around thunderstorms. As we deviated around 1 storm, we went through an obscuration. Shortly after entering the WX, we encountered moderate turbulence and rain which switched to heavy rain. I guess that we also encountered some small hail. Later on, after landing, we found hail and lightning damage on the nose and leading edges of the wings. We got overspd warnings, the flight director and the altimeters failed. We maintained altitude, but climbed about 1200 ft to FL442. The whole event lasted about 30 seconds. Coming out of the WX, we noticed our altitude deviation, as our altimeters were working. About the same time, ATC queried us about our altitude. We informed them as to what happened and that we were correcting. In the future, we will try to do a much better job circumventing WX and using sources available to us -- such as briefings, ATC, PIREPS, etc.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A CESSNA CITATION VII TEMPORARILY LOST CTL OF THE ACFT IN A TSTM AT THEIR CRUISING ALT OF FL430, RESULTING IN A 1200 FT ALT EXCURSION ALONG WITH THE TEMPORARY FAILURE OF THE FLT DIRECTOR AND ALTIMETERS. POSTFLT INSPECTION FOUND LIGHTNING AND HAIL DAMAGE TO THE ACFT NOSE AND WING LEADING EDGES.
