Narrative:
While on the bowie 5 arrival, past kagle but not yet to siler, we were asked if we saw a B737 at about 1 O'clock position and 1 mi, which was level at 12000 ft. When we affirmed that traffic was in sight, we were told to maintain visual separation. The B737 was descended to 11000 in front of us. We slowed to 210 KTS to increase separation and also to comply with the speed restr at siler. After a couple of mins, the controller asked what our speed was. We replied 210 KTS. He asked why we slowed and we said to maintain visual separation from the B737. The controller became upset, sped us to 250 KTS and vectored us off the arrival prior to siler. We complied with the restrs of the arrival at all times. But his response implied that we were deviating from an ATC clearance.

Title: S80 FLC ADJUSTS SPD TO INCREASE SEPARATION WITH B737 ON BOWIE STAR AND D10 CTLR OBJECTS TO PLT'S ACTIONS.
Narrative: WHILE ON THE BOWIE 5 ARR, PAST KAGLE BUT NOT YET TO SILER, WE WERE ASKED IF WE SAW A B737 AT ABOUT 1 O'CLOCK POS AND 1 MI, WHICH WAS LEVEL AT 12000 FT. WHEN WE AFFIRMED THAT TFC WAS IN SIGHT, WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION. THE B737 WAS DSNDED TO 11000 IN FRONT OF US. WE SLOWED TO 210 KTS TO INCREASE SEPARATION AND ALSO TO COMPLY WITH THE SPD RESTR AT SILER. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINS, THE CTLR ASKED WHAT OUR SPD WAS. WE REPLIED 210 KTS. HE ASKED WHY WE SLOWED AND WE SAID TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION FROM THE B737. THE CTLR BECAME UPSET, SPED US TO 250 KTS AND VECTORED US OFF THE ARR PRIOR TO SILER. WE COMPLIED WITH THE RESTRS OF THE ARR AT ALL TIMES. BUT HIS RESPONSE IMPLIED THAT WE WERE DEVIATING FROM AN ATC CLRNC.
