Narrative:
Crew was given instructions to hold on the 270 degree radial at lagrange VOR, 20 mi legs. Given frequency change to another controller who issued clearance 'hold at lagrange on the 270 degree radial 20 mi fix.' crew misinterped this to be the same clearance as previously given. When holding began at lagrange VOR, ATC advised crew of error and said it was not a problem and to return to previous fix. I think we heard what we wanted to hear. Also, the new controller was not very specific that this was different from the previous clearance.
