Narrative:
I was on an instrument training flight. After we received our clearance, both myself and my instructor asked each other if tower cleared us for takeoff. We agreed, crossed the line, realized we had not been cleared, turned 180 degrees. Tower radioed we were not cleared. We said we knew it and were in 180 degree turn back around to get cleared for takeoff. There was no traffic on frequency or in pattern or anywhere near the airport. We were not on the runway.
