Narrative:
Cruising in our cherokee 235 from gary, in, to waukesha, wi, VFR at 10500 ft, over O'hare's airspace, squawking 1200 with mode C turned on, my wife spotted a twin engine airliner (engines mounted on wings) approaching us from our left apparently climbing out from O'hare. On initial sighting it was estimated 1 mi away and appeared to be on a collision course with us. I descended slightly and it passed directly over us, estimated 300 ft above us. I don't believe the other pilots saw us as they took no evasive action. I do not understand how this happened as it is my understanding that ground controllers have radar which idents us as VFR traffic and they know our position, speed, direction of flight and altitude. Also I believe most or all airliners are TCASII equipped and they have the same information in their cockpit. I'm not sure what the minimum separation requirement is in this type of situation (VFR) but this was too close for comfort. Suggest you review radar and communication tapes and find out how it happened.

Title: A PA28 CHEROKEE PVT PLT HAS AN NMAC WITH A CLBING AIRLINE AT 10500 FT 14 MI NE OF ORD, IL.
Narrative: CRUISING IN OUR CHEROKEE 235 FROM GARY, IN, TO WAUKESHA, WI, VFR AT 10500 FT, OVER O'HARE'S AIRSPACE, SQUAWKING 1200 WITH MODE C TURNED ON, MY WIFE SPOTTED A TWIN ENG AIRLINER (ENGS MOUNTED ON WINGS) APCHING US FROM OUR L APPARENTLY CLBING OUT FROM O'HARE. ON INITIAL SIGHTING IT WAS ESTIMATED 1 MI AWAY AND APPEARED TO BE ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH US. I DSNDED SLIGHTLY AND IT PASSED DIRECTLY OVER US, ESTIMATED 300 FT ABOVE US. I DON'T BELIEVE THE OTHER PLTS SAW US AS THEY TOOK NO EVASIVE ACTION. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS HAPPENED AS IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT GND CTLRS HAVE RADAR WHICH IDENTS US AS VFR TFC AND THEY KNOW OUR POS, SPD, DIRECTION OF FLT AND ALT. ALSO I BELIEVE MOST OR ALL AIRLINERS ARE TCASII EQUIPPED AND THEY HAVE THE SAME INFO IN THEIR COCKPIT. I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE MINIMUM SEPARATION REQUIREMENT IS IN THIS TYPE OF SIT (VFR) BUT THIS WAS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT. SUGGEST YOU REVIEW RADAR AND COM TAPES AND FIND OUT HOW IT HAPPENED.
