Narrative:
While on a 4.5 NM final approach to runway 25L at lax (on ILS glide path, approximately 1300-1500 ft MSL) a TCASII traffic alert sounded, quickly followed by a 'monitor vertical speed' TCASII alert, followed again by a TCASII 'climb' command. A missed approach was then immediately executed. The tower was then immediately notified, who issued subsequent missed approach instructions. When the initial TA was given, we noticed the conflicting aircraft symbol was superimposed on our aircraft symbol on the TCASII display, with 100 ft separation below us. TCASII display was set to 5 NM scale. Lax tower reported no aircraft on their scope at any time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 FLC PERFORMS A MISSED APCH WHEN THEIR TCASII DETECTS AND GENERATES AN RA ON AN ACFT 100 FT BELOW THEM WHILE 4 MI FROM RWY 25L AT LAX, CA.
Narrative: WHILE ON A 4.5 NM FINAL APCH TO RWY 25L AT LAX (ON ILS GLIDE PATH, APPROX 1300-1500 FT MSL) A TCASII TFC ALERT SOUNDED, QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY A 'MONITOR VERT SPD' TCASII ALERT, FOLLOWED AGAIN BY A TCASII 'CLB' COMMAND. A MISSED APCH WAS THEN IMMEDIATELY EXECUTED. THE TWR WAS THEN IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED, WHO ISSUED SUBSEQUENT MISSED APCH INSTRUCTIONS. WHEN THE INITIAL TA WAS GIVEN, WE NOTICED THE CONFLICTING ACFT SYMBOL WAS SUPERIMPOSED ON OUR ACFT SYMBOL ON THE TCASII DISPLAY, WITH 100 FT SEPARATION BELOW US. TCASII DISPLAY WAS SET TO 5 NM SCALE. LAX TWR RPTED NO ACFT ON THEIR SCOPE AT ANY TIME.
