Narrative:
While diverting around thunderstorms in IFR conditions, we were given a clearance to cross lewey intersection at FL240. We were not presently on a route, we were giving ourselves headings around the WX after being cleared for the deviation. Immediately after getting clearance to cross lewey at FL240 we had a malfunction with the window heat system and, while working to resolve that, we maintained our current altitude of FL330 and missed the lewey restr. We asked center if they still wanted us to descend and he said no, descend to FL290. I am not aware of any conflicts caused by our inattn and center didn't mention any. We should not have accepted a clearance to cross a fix without first being cleared on a route, direct, etc.

Title: A B757-200 FLC FAILS TO MAKE AN ALT XING RESTR DURING THEIR TROUBLESHOOTING OF A MALFUNCTIONING WINDOW HEAT SYS WHILE AT FL330 NEAR LEWEY INTXN, ZKC, MO.
Narrative: WHILE DIVERTING AROUND TSTMS IN IFR CONDITIONS, WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO CROSS LEWEY INTXN AT FL240. WE WERE NOT PRESENTLY ON A RTE, WE WERE GIVING OURSELVES HDGS AROUND THE WX AFTER BEING CLRED FOR THE DEV. IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING CLRNC TO CROSS LEWEY AT FL240 WE HAD A MALFUNCTION WITH THE WINDOW HEAT SYS AND, WHILE WORKING TO RESOLVE THAT, WE MAINTAINED OUR CURRENT ALT OF FL330 AND MISSED THE LEWEY RESTR. WE ASKED CTR IF THEY STILL WANTED US TO DSND AND HE SAID NO, DSND TO FL290. I AM NOT AWARE OF ANY CONFLICTS CAUSED BY OUR INATTN AND CTR DIDN'T MENTION ANY. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED A CLRNC TO CROSS A FIX WITHOUT FIRST BEING CLRED ON A RTE, DIRECT, ETC.
