Narrative:

Approach controller had given us a descent clearance from 5000 ft MSL to 3000 ft MSL and requested speed reduction upon reaching 3000 ft from 210 KTS, to 170 KTS. Also, we were to depart armel VOR on a 50 degree heading. My copilot had already set up the lda approach to runway 19 and had sent it over to my FMS. When I started my turn to 50 degree heading, I thought I had already crossed armel because of what the FMS was showing, which, in reality, I was still about 5 NM west of armel. The controller advised us of our early turn and gave us a vector back to the southeast. I realized that it would have been better to have gone to the VOR mode until reaching armel and then heading mode. Normally, I would not have had the approach passed over to my FMS until receiving vectors. My copilot and I have reviewed our mistakes and have taken action on not letting this type of situation occur again. Situational awareness is of the utmost importance.

Title: A DA90 PIC TURNS EARLY ON THE HDG CLRNC W OF AML WHEN USING THE MOVING MAP DISPLAY INSTEAD OF GOING TO THE VOR MODE TO CHK STATION PASSAGE AT AML, VA.

Narrative: APCH CTLR HAD GIVEN US A DSCNT CLRNC FROM 5000 FT MSL TO 3000 FT MSL AND REQUESTED SPD REDUCTION UPON REACHING 3000 FT FROM 210 KTS, TO 170 KTS. ALSO, WE WERE TO DEPART ARMEL VOR ON A 50 DEG HDG. MY COPLT HAD ALREADY SET UP THE LDA APCH TO RWY 19 AND HAD SENT IT OVER TO MY FMS. WHEN I STARTED MY TURN TO 50 DEG HDG, I THOUGHT I HAD ALREADY CROSSED ARMEL BECAUSE OF WHAT THE FMS WAS SHOWING, WHICH, IN REALITY, I WAS STILL ABOUT 5 NM W OF ARMEL. THE CTLR ADVISED US OF OUR EARLY TURN AND GAVE US A VECTOR BACK TO THE SE. I REALIZED THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER TO HAVE GONE TO THE VOR MODE UNTIL REACHING ARMEL AND THEN HDG MODE. NORMALLY, I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE APCH PASSED OVER TO MY FMS UNTIL RECEIVING VECTORS. MY COPLT AND I HAVE REVIEWED OUR MISTAKES AND HAVE TAKEN ACTION ON NOT LETTING THIS TYPE OF SIT OCCUR AGAIN. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
