Narrative:
On the ground, I picked up my clearance from clearance delivery. I was cleared as filed, but told to call back when ready for takeoff, instead of receiving a clearance void time. I called ready for takeoff, and was released, and was apparently told to maintain runway heading. Runway heading was 180 degrees opposite of my direction of flight. My mindset was, clear day at an uncontrolled field, better to be sure to do a left pattern departure. I did, monitoring both the CTAF and departure frequencys. When I called departure, they were quite upset that I had turned to my course. Main problems: 1) my failure to be alert to second transmission from clearance delivery. All that I expected to hear was 'released,' and so my mind quit listening for the additional instruction. 2) my VFR mindset wasn't appropriate for the IFR flight plan.

Title: A GA ATP CFI PLT USES A L TURNOUT FOR A STANDARD PATTERN DEP PROC WHEN ON AN IFR CLRNC AND TOLD TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG OUT OF GSH, IN.
Narrative: ON THE GND, I PICKED UP MY CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY. I WAS CLRED AS FILED, BUT TOLD TO CALL BACK WHEN READY FOR TKOF, INSTEAD OF RECEIVING A CLRNC VOID TIME. I CALLED READY FOR TKOF, AND WAS RELEASED, AND WAS APPARENTLY TOLD TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG. RWY HDG WAS 180 DEGS OPPOSITE OF MY DIRECTION OF FLT. MY MINDSET WAS, CLR DAY AT AN UNCTLED FIELD, BETTER TO BE SURE TO DO A L PATTERN DEP. I DID, MONITORING BOTH THE CTAF AND DEP FREQS. WHEN I CALLED DEP, THEY WERE QUITE UPSET THAT I HAD TURNED TO MY COURSE. MAIN PROBS: 1) MY FAILURE TO BE ALERT TO SECOND XMISSION FROM CLRNC DELIVERY. ALL THAT I EXPECTED TO HEAR WAS 'RELEASED,' AND SO MY MIND QUIT LISTENING FOR THE ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION. 2) MY VFR MINDSET WASN'T APPROPRIATE FOR THE IFR FLT PLAN.
