Narrative:
On approach, controller told us to descend to 4000 ft from 7000 ft. Passing 5800 ft, controller told us to go back to 6000 ft -- we weren't cleared to 4000 ft. No conflict occurred. On the ground in pit, controller called us at aircraft to tell us they were in error, we 'were' cleared to 4000 ft.
