Narrative:
Crew planned and briefed runway 26L departure from ont (prado 5 thrmal transition). Runway 26R was given by ATC for departure instead as aircraft was being cleared for takeoff. First officer reselected prado 5 in FMC and runway 26R. No transition were displayed, therefore not selected. This was not noticed by either crew member. After pdz VOR on departure aircraft started a left turn towards drk (prescott, az). ATC noticed turn and gave a turn to the right to intercept the pdz 130 degree radial to the thrmal transition. The remainder was flown normally. At no time was crew aware of traffic conflicts and ATC did not mention any. The end result was the crew being distracted by a runway change so close to being cleared for takeoff. Will stop aircraft next time and make sure all FMS 'links' are complete. A good lesson for both of us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757 CARGO FLC CHANGES THEIR FMS FROM RWY 26L TO RWY 26R FOR THE PRADO 5 DEP PROC AND EXPERIENCE A HEADING DEV OVER PDZ, CA.
Narrative: CREW PLANNED AND BRIEFED RWY 26L DEP FROM ONT (PRADO 5 THRMAL TRANSITION). RWY 26R WAS GIVEN BY ATC FOR DEP INSTEAD AS ACFT WAS BEING CLRED FOR TKOF. FO RESELECTED PRADO 5 IN FMC AND RWY 26R. NO TRANSITION WERE DISPLAYED, THEREFORE NOT SELECTED. THIS WAS NOT NOTICED BY EITHER CREW MEMBER. AFTER PDZ VOR ON DEP ACFT STARTED A L TURN TOWARDS DRK (PRESCOTT, AZ). ATC NOTICED TURN AND GAVE A TURN TO THE R TO INTERCEPT THE PDZ 130 DEG RADIAL TO THE THRMAL TRANSITION. THE REMAINDER WAS FLOWN NORMALLY. AT NO TIME WAS CREW AWARE OF TFC CONFLICTS AND ATC DID NOT MENTION ANY. THE END RESULT WAS THE CREW BEING DISTRACTED BY A RWY CHANGE SO CLOSE TO BEING CLRED FOR TKOF. WILL STOP ACFT NEXT TIME AND MAKE SURE ALL FMS 'LINKS' ARE COMPLETE. A GOOD LESSON FOR BOTH OF US.
