Narrative:
Before departure, we (flight attendants) notified the gate agents working our trip that they'd put a severely overweight passenger in an exit row. Furthermore, we went on to explain that the passenger (mr X) was wearing a seatbelt extension, which is a violation of FAA procedures and regulations. The gate agents advised passenger (mr X) of the situation explaining to him that people in an exit row weren't allowed to wear such devices and that he would have to be moved to another seat not in an exit row. At that point, passenger mr X told the agents he wouldn't wear the extension and removed it. This was enough to satisfy the agents. After takeoff, mr X put the seatbelt extension back on. When I pointed out to him that he was in violation of FAA regulations, he told me he didn't care and continued to wear the extension. Later, after consulting with other crew members, we informed mr X we were having the flight met in austin by the auths. We eventually confiscated the device and one of our flight attendant handed it off to the agents in austin upon our arrival. The flight was met by airport police who cited the passenger.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CABIN ATTENDANT, S80, SJC-AUS. ON BOARDING, SEVERELY OVERWT MAN SEATED AT EXIT ROW (FAR PART 121 PT 585) WITH SEATBELT EXTENSION ON, REFUSED TO REMOVE IT. CITED BY AUS POLICE.
Narrative: BEFORE DEP, WE (FLT ATTENDANTS) NOTIFIED THE GATE AGENTS WORKING OUR TRIP THAT THEY'D PUT A SEVERELY OVERWT PAX IN AN EXIT ROW. FURTHERMORE, WE WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT THE PAX (MR X) WAS WEARING A SEATBELT EXTENSION, WHICH IS A VIOLATION OF FAA PROCS AND REGS. THE GATE AGENTS ADVISED PAX (MR X) OF THE SIT EXPLAINING TO HIM THAT PEOPLE IN AN EXIT ROW WEREN'T ALLOWED TO WEAR SUCH DEVICES AND THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO BE MOVED TO ANOTHER SEAT NOT IN AN EXIT ROW. AT THAT POINT, PAX MR X TOLD THE AGENTS HE WOULDN'T WEAR THE EXTENSION AND REMOVED IT. THIS WAS ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE AGENTS. AFTER TKOF, MR X PUT THE SEATBELT EXTENSION BACK ON. WHEN I POINTED OUT TO HIM THAT HE WAS IN VIOLATION OF FAA REGS, HE TOLD ME HE DIDN'T CARE AND CONTINUED TO WEAR THE EXTENSION. LATER, AFTER CONSULTING WITH OTHER CREW MEMBERS, WE INFORMED MR X WE WERE HAVING THE FLT MET IN AUSTIN BY THE AUTHS. WE EVENTUALLY CONFISCATED THE DEVICE AND ONE OF OUR FLT ATTENDANT HANDED IT OFF TO THE AGENTS IN AUSTIN UPON OUR ARR. THE FLT WAS MET BY ARPT POLICE WHO CITED THE PAX.
