Narrative:
Called ready for takeoff, as we approached hold short line for runway 20C at bna. Tower gave us heading to fly after takeoff and cleared us for takeoff. Just prior to our actually reaching the hold short line, and seconds after our takeoff clearance, we noticed a king air on an approximately 1 mi final. We then stopped at the hold short line intending to broadcast to bna tower that we were holding short of runway 20C. Just as, or maybe micro seconds after, we stopped our taxi, the aircraft on final transmitted that they were on short final. Bna tower instructed us to hold short, we acknowledged, and the aircraft on final was cleared to land. This was a non event because of the calm, professional handling by bna tower and the calm, professional action taken by both the king air on final and us. As I look back on this incident, my opinion is that we may have developed a habit of calling for takeoff a little too soon.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR PLT WITH TKOF CLRNC ALREADY ISSUED, HOLDS SHORT OF RWY WHEN HE OBSERVES APCHING ACFT ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative: CALLED READY FOR TKOF, AS WE APCHED HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 20C AT BNA. TWR GAVE US HDG TO FLY AFTER TKOF AND CLRED US FOR TKOF. JUST PRIOR TO OUR ACTUALLY REACHING THE HOLD SHORT LINE, AND SECONDS AFTER OUR TKOF CLRNC, WE NOTICED A KING AIR ON AN APPROX 1 MI FINAL. WE THEN STOPPED AT THE HOLD SHORT LINE INTENDING TO BROADCAST TO BNA TWR THAT WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 20C. JUST AS, OR MAYBE MICRO SECONDS AFTER, WE STOPPED OUR TAXI, THE ACFT ON FINAL XMITTED THAT THEY WERE ON SHORT FINAL. BNA TWR INSTRUCTED US TO HOLD SHORT, WE ACKNOWLEDGED, AND THE ACFT ON FINAL WAS CLRED TO LAND. THIS WAS A NON EVENT BECAUSE OF THE CALM, PROFESSIONAL HANDLING BY BNA TWR AND THE CALM, PROFESSIONAL ACTION TAKEN BY BOTH THE KING AIR ON FINAL AND US. AS I LOOK BACK ON THIS INCIDENT, MY OPINION IS THAT WE MAY HAVE DEVELOPED A HABIT OF CALLING FOR TKOF A LITTLE TOO SOON.
