Narrative:
Level FL310 65 mi southeast laa, flight attendant opened cockpit door, starting saying something about passenger. ATC said 30 degrees right for traffic, started turn. At 15 degrees controller said confirm 30 degrees left. I said I thought you said 30 degrees right. We immediately turned back 30 degrees left from the original heading. Saw traffic at 2 O'clock position. Never got closer than 8 mi of aircraft. No TA or RA on TCASII. Controller thanked us and sent us to another frequency. We thought we heard right 30 degrees but flight attendant entry caused some distraction.
