Narrative:
Over touchdown zone runway 21 at ckb, deer was struck by left landing gear, go around executed, emergency declared, did a low approach to have fire/rescue visually inspect gear, then made an uneventful landing. Aircraft handled normal after deer strike in the air and on ground. Emergency was declared because exact condition of landing gear was uncertain. Repos flight so no passenger on board. Minimal visual damage to aircraft noted. The problem was caused by holes in the airport boundary fencing that allowed the deer airport property access. Only had a few seconds to react because the landing was made at night and deer were not seen until directly in front of the aircraft in the landing lights. Cannot think of any other way to handle the situation. If landing was continued after deer strike, we may have hit more deer (we saw 3 of them) and since we were empty and light it was easier to get the aircraft away from the ground.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEER HIT BY ACFT DURING LNDG AT CKB, WV. GAR COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY FOLLOWED BY SUCCESSFUL LNDG.
Narrative: OVER TOUCHDOWN ZONE RWY 21 AT CKB, DEER WAS STRUCK BY L LNDG GEAR, GAR EXECUTED, EMER DECLARED, DID A LOW APCH TO HAVE FIRE/RESCUE VISUALLY INSPECT GEAR, THEN MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. ACFT HANDLED NORMAL AFTER DEER STRIKE IN THE AIR AND ON GND. EMER WAS DECLARED BECAUSE EXACT CONDITION OF LNDG GEAR WAS UNCERTAIN. REPOS FLT SO NO PAX ON BOARD. MINIMAL VISUAL DAMAGE TO ACFT NOTED. THE PROB WAS CAUSED BY HOLES IN THE ARPT BOUNDARY FENCING THAT ALLOWED THE DEER ARPT PROPERTY ACCESS. ONLY HAD A FEW SECONDS TO REACT BECAUSE THE LNDG WAS MADE AT NIGHT AND DEER WERE NOT SEEN UNTIL DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE ACFT IN THE LNDG LIGHTS. CANNOT THINK OF ANY OTHER WAY TO HANDLE THE SIT. IF LNDG WAS CONTINUED AFTER DEER STRIKE, WE MAY HAVE HIT MORE DEER (WE SAW 3 OF THEM) AND SINCE WE WERE EMPTY AND LIGHT IT WAS EASIER TO GET THE ACFT AWAY FROM THE GND.
